Description
The RadiSys Promentum® SYS-6010 is an industry first application ready platform enabling 10-Gigabit Ethernet fabric connectivity. It is a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) platform and integrates multitude of state-of-the-art building blocks such as 10 GE switch and control module, quad-core and dual-core compute module, packet processing, multi-core DSP, storage modules, STM-1/OC-3, PDH and Gigabit line card modules and platform software including data path software to meet the next generation performance requirements for the target applications. The managed platform is pre-validated with a variety of modules for configuration integrity and enables TEMs to address multiple applications using specific configurations. For example, customers can build a Radio Network Controller (or Base Station Controller) using the 10 Gigabit switching, STM-1/Gigabit Ethernet line cards, and dual core compute modules. Alternatively, they can build a high performance application or media server platform with primarily compute and storage modules.
The SYS-6010 is ideal for 3G-wireless and wire-line infrastructure next generation infrastructure elements which must address significant capacity increase while decreasing cost. Ten-fold throughput increase and five-fold compute performance increase are typical in the requirements for the next generation equipment. Further, Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) are trying to cope with the challenge of time-to-market with reduced staffing and budgets.
The SYS-6010 enables TEMs meet their requirements for applications such as RNC/BSC, Media Gateways, IMS (CSCF, application and media servers) elements and IPTV infrastructure. The application ready platform is complete with the right best in class building blocks, hardware and software, to meet performance requirements for these target applications. Such a carrier grade platform enables the TEMs to concentrate on their key value add – application software – while relying on comprehensive system engineering and integration by RadiSys.
The application ready platform is designed to be a common managed platform for multitude of network elements and accelerates time-to-market. It incorporates the modularity of the Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMCs) to enable configuration flexibility and is architected to ease a smoother migration to MicroTCA architecture in future as needed.
TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP
Working at the platform level provides benefits to customers in many ways. In addition to providing a head start for product development, it removes the burden of managing multiple building block suppliers that make up the platform. By choosing the right platform and its provider, customers can also benefit by the future growth path for the platform. Leveraging the platform roadmap ensures “future proofing” for the applications. Overall, such integrated platforms allow TEMs to take advantage of total life cycle management including service offerings and training thus lowering their cost of ownership.
PLATFORM ARCHITECTURE
The RadiSys Promentum® SYS-6010 10 GE fabric AdvancedTCA application ready platform architecture incorporates leading edge technologies such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet (PICMG 3.1 Option 9), dual-core computing, NPU-based line card for wire-speed packet processing and platform software including datapath software. The platform architecture is designed to interoperate with both RadiSys and third party modules. The platform is pre-integrated with validated RadiSys modules to create various configurations to meet the specific application. Some of the validated modules (not all inclusive) include ATCA-2210, ATCA-4300/10, ATCA-4500, ATCA-7400, and ATCA-7220 in either ATCA-6000 or ATCA-6006 shelves. The configured AdvancedTCA line cards utilizing AMC options such as; 3202, AMC-7211/12, and AMC-720x. Please refer to each specific module data sheet for more detail.
The architecture is designed to leverage common elements such as the shelf, shelf management and modules across multiple network elements. It also enables a multitude of rack configurations for worldwide use – 19”, 23” for North American and 535mm for ETSI.
Common platform architecture across multiple network elements enables TEMs with better efficiencies during development, training and reduce the number of FRUs maintained for service and support. Common platforms resulting from common architecture also enable Service Providers to get better economies of scale in CAPEX and OPEX.
The SYS-6010 is an open architecture with SA Forum HPI 1.1 compliant interface. Such Application Programming Interfaces allow TEMs to develop applications with compliant third party hardware modules, middleware and applications. It also enables applications to be easily ported across different hardware platforms thus avoiding dependency on a specific hardware platform.
CONFIGURABLE PLATFORM WITH BEST IN CLASS BUILDING BLOCKS
The SYS-6010 is a highly configurable platform. It has been specifically designed with modularity to add options to fit the application both for cost and performance. For example, the user can add system management functions to the platform using the COM Express mezzanine on the switch and control module, thus saving valuable revenue producing node slot. Such targeted configurations maximize platform price/performance. They also increase reliability of the platform by eliminating unneeded functions that could cause failures.
The application ready platform is integrated with best in class building blocks. The list of building blocks is given below. More detail for each of these building blocks can be found in the individual datasheets.
CARRIER GRADE SHELVES
Promentum® ATCA-6000: 12U Chassis, providing industry-leading density and enabling three chassis in a standard 42U telco rack
Promentum® ATCA-6006: 6-slot, low profile 5U ATCA shelf for smaller/denser systems and cost/space constrained edge and access applications requiring a fewer slots.
COMPUTE MODULES
The ATCA-4500 is the 7th generation single board computer from Radisys. It is a high performance, single slot AdvancedTCA computer module based on the single socket L5518 Intel® Xeon® processor.
The Promentum ATCA-4300: Compute Processing Module with single or dual Intel® dual-core Xeon processors, 2MB secondary (L2) cache, support for up to 8GB DDR2-400 ECC registered SDRAM via 4 DIMM sockets, dual Gigabit Ethernet Fabric and Base Interfaces. Additional flexibility is provided by two AMC sites and storage connection options, including Fibre Channel and SAS/SATA.
SWITCH AND CONTROL MODULE
Promentum ATCA-2210: 10 Gigabit switch and control module with a full 10Gigabit Ethernet switching fabric, integrated Network Timing Sub-system, optional onboard COM Express processor with SAS/SATA disk module, optional shelf management functions, and over 40 Gbps up/cross link capability.
NPU-BASED LINE CARDS
Promentum ATCA-7220: 10 Gigabit Packet Processing Module with modular memory design for the Network Processing Units, socketed RDRAM, optional TCAM memory module, and a fabric interface implemented as a mezzanine to provide fabric choices.
Promentum ATCA-7400: Line card consisting of an AMC carrier card and a choice of interface AMCs such as SONET/SDH, PDH or Gigabit Ethernet.
MEDIA RESOURCE MODULE
Promentum ATCA-9100: ATCA media processing blade that provides the highest density of media processing through the use of latest multi-core DSP silicon
PLATFORM SOFTWARE
The platform is optionally pre-integrated with Windriver PNE LE 1.x and MontaVista Linux CGE 3.1/4.x. It also includes SA Forum HPI 1.1 compliant shelf management software with system management interfaces – CLI, SNMP, HPI and RMCP (IPMI over LAN). Specific datapath software is also available with line cards for application specific datapath software. For example, ATM-IP interworking software is included with ATCA-7401 line card for the STM-1/OC-3 interfaces.
In summary, the Promentum SYS-6010 is a fully integrated and validated managed platform. With a 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch and control module, the SYS-6010 offers the highest bandwidth node connectivity, up-link and cross-link capability and the highest processing density per slot. Modular AMC-based I/O and packet processing functionality provide a modular scalable platform that allows for flexible expansion of both features and system density. The NEBS qualified platform enables TEMs to focus on their application and accelerates their time-to-market.
