ENP-2611
Full-Size PCI Intel IXP2400 Packet Processing card
Description
Designing high-capacity value-add networking products and services for security, threat management, network access and control, and other edge applications require components or platforms that can deliver and maintain high levels of throughput while processing packets. To stay competitive, network vendors must continue to increase performance and capacity while minimizing development time and costs. Building platforms based on NPUs (Network Processor Units) enables application developers to offload processor intensive packet level operations, normally handled in the CPU (Central Processing Unit), to the NPU and leverage the power of the NPU’s fully programmable, multi-threaded microengine architectures. The NPU architecture can maintain line rate capacity without degrading system and network performance.
RadiSys Corporation’s PCI-based ENP-2611 product family uses the Intel® IXP2400 Network Processor for deep packet inspection via software pipelining at up to 2.5 Gigabits per second (Gbps) speeds for a range of high-performance applications. By installing the ENP-2611 in commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) server technology, application vendors can quickly develop, program, and deploy a multitude of high-performance platforms.
Application Flexibility
The ability of the ENP-2611 to support 2.5Gbps line rates makes it suitable for a wide variety of high-performance applications such as multiservice switches, routers, broadband access devices, wireless infrastructure, security with intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS) systems, along with a multitude of Voice over IP (VoIP), Virtual Private Network (VPN), and other gateway-related products. The power and programmability of the ENP-2611 enables developers to, quickly add Layer 4-7 switching including content load balancing and firewall functionality into their existing applications.
Platform Flexibility
Constructing a network device to operate at wire speed securely usually involves numerous hardware based Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) to provide line-rate switching, routing, or other packet manipulation functionality. While capable of wire speed performance, ASICs have inherent shortcomings. They are expensive to design, build, and take a very long time to get to market. Additionally, they cannot be reprogrammed to compensate for changing network conditions. They also fail to enable developers to respond to changing networking or application flexibility – an necessity in today’s constantly growing and evolving security threat environment. The ENP-2611 is a fully programmable device, and can be retasked to adapt to changes in the network such as new security threats, the introduction of new protocols, or additional packet filtering or Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. For example, a simple software download to a wireless device built around the ENP-2611 can quickly restore network protection against a newly discovered security threat. The ENP-2611’s high capacity Intel® IXP2400 network processor enables wire speed Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) performance with greater flexibility and lower cost than standard ASIC designs.
Hardware Description
The ENP-2611 is a full-size 32/64-bit PCI 2.3 compliant card available in supporting 3x 1 GE port. The ENP-2611 uses the power of the IXP2400 NPU to provide more than 5.4 giga-operations per second of processing capacity. The IXP2400 includes a 32-bit XScale processor operating at 600MHz and includes 32Kbytes instruction cache, 32Kbytes data cache, and 2Kbytes mini-data cache. The IXP2400 also houses the eight 32-bit independent and programmable multi-threaded microengines, and a 4K-instruction program store for wire speed packet analysis, processing and forwarding. Designed on an industry standard PCI form factor, the ENP-2611 includes a PCI-to-PCI bridge that allows operation of the PCI bus at 64-bit width and speeds of up to 66MHz. With a high-speed PCI interconnect, several ENP-2611 boards can be combined on a single PCI backplane or installed side-by-side inside a server.
To support large applications, the ENP-2611 includes a 200-pin SODIMM Double Data Rate (DDR) socket capable of supporting up to 1Gbyte of ECC SDRAM for NPU store and forward operations. For high-speed look-up tables and access lists, the ENP-2611 includes up to 16Mbytes of on-board Quad Data Rate (QDR) SDRAM. The ENP-2611 also includes 16Mbytes of on-board StrataFlash memory, for initialization and boot-up code allowing the board to be self-provisioning at start-up.
The ENP-2611 incorporates one PMC-Sierra PM3386 and one PM3387 Dual Gigabit Ethernet MAC controller to support up to three GbE ports for fast-path data plane traffic. It also includes one Intel 82559 for 10/100Mbps control plane traffic or debugging services via external RJ45 jack.
Software Description
To facilitate the development, debug, and troubleshooting of applications software, the ENP-2611 is compatible with the Intel Internet Exchange Architecture (IXA) Software Development Kit (SDK). IXA enables developers to reuse and port existing application IXP2400 code into next generation IXP-based products. In addition to the IXA SDK, RadiSys provides an ENP SDK, which provides programming and runtime libraries specific to RadiSys ENP platforms. Several Intel Ecosystem Partners offer microcode development tools that support the ENP-2611, including the Teja® NP development environments.
The ENP-2611 also offers support for MontaVista® Linux™ operating system along with WindRiver® VxWorks™. These support packages include the operating system, TCP/IP networking, and target development support. This high degree of integration reduces development time by enabling designers to focus on developing intellectual property.
