Description

The 3G Partnership Project (3GPP) has defined the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for supporting converged multimedia services. Convedia Media Servers deliver the Multimedia Resource Function (MRF) component of the IMS architecture, to provide an open, multi-service audio and video packet processing element in any 3G network deployment. Convedia media servers, residing in the core of the IMS, are completely agnostic to the access technology used for subscribers to utilize the IMS service. In this way, Convedia media servers fully support the notion of a single service deployment architecture to support fixed mobile convergence.

MRF In IMS Architecture

Real Time Protocol (RTP) media packets are sent/received across the Mb interface. Packets are received at the MRFP across the Mb, processed as specified by the control commands (received across the Mp interface) by the MRFC, and then sent out after processing across the Mb interface. In the 3GPP architecture, the Mb interface is used to interconnect with Media Gateways, as well as the GGSN.

Convedia media servers support 2 control interface options:

  • H.248 – For MRFP control, Convedia media servers support the H.248 protocol as defined in the 3GPP Mp interface. Simple announcements (H.248.7) along with conferencing, IVR, and variable announcements (H.248.9) are supported today.
  • SIP - While the 3GPP has specified using H.248 for MRFP Control, the worldwide telecommunications industry has shown a strong preference for using SIP for media server control. Consistent with the 3GPP SIP–based Mr interface for MRF control, Convedia media servers also support the Sr interface for HTTP–based fetching of XML–based scripts such as SIP with VoiceXML (most often used in IVR applications by our application partners), and SIP with Media Server Markup Language (MSML – provides feature–rich mid–stream control for complex audio/video conferencing applications).
