Promentum ATCA-1200

ATCA Managed Quad-AMC Carrier Blade

Description

The ATCA-1200 AMC carrier blade is more than just a hardware AMC to ATCA adaptor blade. It is a complete hardware and software solution that enables AMCs to function in an ATCA shelf. Starting from the premise that the AMCs may be “un-intelligent” I/O devices, the ATCA 1200 includes a fully managed environment for the AMC, with the inclusion of an on-board PowerQUICC™ III (PQ III) processor, a 26 or 24 port managed switch and a network timing switch to manage clock distribution to synchronous I/O interfaces such as STM-1/OC 3 and E1/T1 adaptor AMC modules. The ATCA-1200 is essentially a sub-system within the ATCA shelf.

The ATCA-1200 AMC carrier blade can be configured to support 4 x Single-Mid-Size AMCs or 2 x Double-Mid-Size AMCs, or a combination thereof.

Software is included with the blade to provision, manage applications running on the AMCs, and manage the data path on I/O AMCs.

The ATCA-1200 AMC carrier blade is available stand-alone or as a fully integrated solution in the form of:

  • ATCA-7400 line card solution including one or more AMC-7201 or AMC-7202 Quad STM-1/OC-3 AMC with data path and data path control software.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The ATCA-1200 is a powerful ATCA solution that enables a user to build multiple ATCA modules with different AMC configurations – PrAMC, Security (IPSec/SSL), Storage, I/O AMC, etc. One of the possible configurations is available as complete integrated solutions, mentioned above, the ATCA-7400.

Data and Control Plane Separation:

With the goal of optimizing data flow and keeping with ATCA’s basic premise of separating the control and data plane, the ATCA-1200 control plane consists of the MPC8548 PowerQuik III processor, the Local Management processor (LMP), the PCI-E links connecting each AMC to the LMP and a 1GE control port from the LMP to the switch. The PCI-E links, which are routed to each AMC via a PCI-E switch, provides the means of supporting “un-intelligent” boards and allow an application running on the LMP to initialized the AMC device much like legacy PCI devices were initialized. PCI-E switch also supports bridging function to enable AMC to AMC PCI-E communication or control. The data-plane consists of several 1GE links (number depend on configuration) coming from each AMC via the switch to the 2 x 10GE or 2 x 4 x 1 GE ATCA fabric interface, depending on the board configuration (see block diagram). The LMP manages the data-plane through the management of the GE Switch.

The switch routes 5 x 1GE to each AMC (Ports 0,1, 14, 15,& 16), 2 x 1GE port to the LMP and 2 x 10GE to support PICMG 3.1 opt. 9 backplane fabric connection. The board can also be configured to support 2 x 4 x 1GE, PICMG 3.1 opt. 3 backplane fabric connection. The base fabric is routed through the switch, providing direct connection of the LMP to the base, and allowing the LMP to control AMCs that don’t have PCI-E.

The switch is a fully managed switch, controlled by software running on the LMP. It allows data path management to and from the AMCs and the ATCA shelf for APS, data aggregation, tagging and other networking functions.

The Local Management Processor (LMP):

The LMP is a stand-alone processing entity. It features a PQ III running at 1.3GHz interfacing to redundant pair of 64MB Flash for device configuration, Linux OS boot image and file system. The LMP can support up to 2GB DDR2 SDRAM. Its prime task is to run switch management software, data control path software including clock signal management, diagnostics and application provisioning software.

AMC Port connection support:

The ATCA-1200 supports: AMC.1 with x 2 PCI-E to Ports 4 & 5, AMC.2 with 5 x GE to Ports 0,1,14, 15 and 16 and AMC.3 with Ports 2 and 3 interconnected between AMC bays to support storage interconnections between bays. This allows processor AMCs to interconnect with storage AMCs on the carrier. Ports 17, 18, 19 and 20 are routed to Zone 3 for optional RTM signal entry.

IPMI Support:

The ATCA-1200 includes an Intelligent Peripheral Management Controller (IPMC) to monitor its health as well as manage E-keying and hot-swapping in the ATCA shelf. It also manages the AMC hot-swap and E-keying and reports the state and health of the AMCs back to the ATCA Shelf Manager.

FUTURE CONFIGURATIONS

Leveraging the flexibility of the AMC it is possible to configure the following ATCA modules. These additional configurations will be available in future.

  • Pentium-M™ CPU Server Module
  • Signaling (SS7/SIGTRAN) Adapters
  • Security (IPSec/SSL) Module
  • Media Processing Module

STANDARDS COMPLIANCE

The ATCA-1200 Managed AMC Carrier blade is designed to comply with a host of industry standards: PICMG 3.0 (AdvancedTCA), AMC.0 (subject to ECN002), AMC.1,AMC.2 and AMC.3, (AdvancedTCA Modular Card). With this level of industry standard compliance customers have a wealth of choices for AMCs to work with RadiSys to create innovative and new configurations to meet their market opportunity.
